A New [to me] Technique

During our summer trip through Texas, I shot a bit of a series of road-side signs. Texas has these..well..Texas sized signs advertising everything along the side of the highways.

I’ve been planning on trying this technique for a while, and finally did so this morning. It turned out better than I even expected. You take the negative (the part you’re supposed to throw away) from a Fuji FP-100c image, let it dry completely, then bleach off the black backing. I used Softscrub with bleach. It’s a caustic, smelly process, but oh so worth it.

These images are straight off the scanner. Both shot with a Polaroid 600 SE.

Aaron & Tammy – Telling Your [Love] Story

More people should do this! Aaron called me to set up a special, surprise photo shoot with his wife for their first anniversary. We started shooting outside the church where they got married, then went to the Plaza and the hotel where they had their reception. It’s so great when couples take time to document their lives on occasions other than their engagement and wedding. We should all do it!

Oh yeah…and there’s a little one on the way too, so this doubled as a bit of a maternity session. Tammy is due at nearly the same time as my wife!

Chris & Jessie’s Polaroids

Maria and I had the amazing honor of photographing Chris & Jessie’s wedding this weekend at the fantastic Magnolia Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska. As usual, there is much more to come, but this time around I went a little crazy on the Polaroids. Here is actually a fairly small sample of the instant images I created this weekend.

My favorite 100 type film, expired Polaroid Blue. Polaroid 600 SE with 75mm and 127mm lenses.

Expired Image film, Spectra SE camera. The Sonar autofocus is awesome, it uses sound waves, so it can focus in complete darkness. Sweet on the dance floor.

Fujifilm FP-100b and FP-3000b fresh film in a Polaroid 600 SE.

W’s Newborn Portraits

Parents, please please please do what Brian and Julie did. They had me out on W’s one-week birthday. Babies grow SO much in their first few weeks, it’s so awesome to get some photos of your sweet one in his or her first week. Check out this guy!

We were delighted to spend a Friday afternoon and evening with Heidi and Darrin on their big day. You might remember their awesome carnival engagement photos. Just as Kansas City’s newest couple was getting ready to head out of the church for their reception, a ginormous thunder storm hit. They ducked out the door into their waiting car, but everyone still got soaked. Everyone took it in stride, and went on to a fantastic party.

W’s Newborn Polaroids

First the photo nerd stuff. I had pretty much given up on Impossible’s Silver Shade films when they released the new Color Shade material. The SS is very tempermental, especially when it comes to warm ambient temperatures. But I knew today I would be shooting inside, so I grabbed a pack of PX 600 SS (v.05) on my way out the door, and I’m so glad I did. I LOVE the way babies look on Silver Shade. (These images were all shot with a Polaroid SLR 680 SE)

Now…I present a few instant film images of 1-week-old W. HOW FREAKING CUTE IS THIS LITTLE GUY??? I shot his parents’ wedding reception last year, and let me tell you they’re going to be AWESOME parents. Congrats guys! More to come soon.

Ryan & Kelly’s Polaroids

We got a *LITTLE* reprieve from the insane heat for Ryan & Kelly’s wedding yesterday. More to come of course, but here are some Polaroids! This was my first wedding to try out the new PX70 Color Shade film from Impossible. If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I am completely obsessed with this new film. Images from this film get better after 24-48 hours, but I just couldn’t wait to post them! These images were shot with my Polaroid SX-70 Alpha Executive Edition.

My boys, Gabe and Malachi came out for Aunt Kate and Uncle-Elect Orion’s engagement session.

Now, you must keep in mind I’m TERRIBLY biased about these boys of mine. AND I tend to over-analyze things, especially photography.

But…I think these are pretty dang good for $1 plastic cameras shot by a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I find it interesting that Gabe (4) tends toward portrait shooting while Malachi (2) seems to be our PJ shooter.

Kate & Orion Are Engaged!

s My baby sister is getting MARRIED! I am so happy for her and Orion. They’re both such wonderful people, and I’m so excited to welcome Orion to the circus that is our family. Since they’re getting married in January, they wanted to get some photos ASAP for their Save-The-Date cards. So we headed out to Lawrence for dinner at Local Burger then to the KU campus for a few shots. My sister had an AWESOME idea for a concept image for the cards, so we ran with it. Those images aren’t in this post, you’ll have to wait for them

Darin & Heidi are Engaged

I’ve been wanting to shoot an engagement session at a carnival for quite some time. And this year I found TWO awesome couples who wanted to take me up on it. First up are Darin and Heidi. These two are getting married next week! We headed down to the Johnson County fair and had an awesome time.

Cara & Ian’s wedding was a HOT, beautiful, romantic, intimate day. They met at Rita’s on the River, a Mexican restaurant (really yummy) and margarita bar on San Antonio’s Riverwalk. The year was 2008. Cara & Ian were in town for a little thing we like to call the 2008 NCAA National Championship which was won by a little team we like to call the Kansas Jayhawks. They returned to the place they met to get married in front of just a few of their closest friends and family.

I just got back some expired Kodak 400TN from the lab that I shot with my Bronica ETRS 645 camera. Got some cool stuff of my kids at home and at our FAVORITE burger place, Localburger. (And a bonus shot of my friend Andy).
